Engineer Bill Fishwick recalls that one of the B707-138Bs was found to be slower than the other aircraft in the fleet. As part of the investigations, a number of cockpit instruments were replaced with instruments which had been subjected to additional accuracy checks. These instruments were marked with an orange dot on the glass. The aircraft was sent back to Boeing for checks with the Boeing owned F-86 Sabre chase aircraft but in the event the Sabre was unavailable and the 707 came back to Australia without having the checks done. For some years after, the instruments retained the orange dot markings. It is believed that this aircraft was VH-EBJ and that the performance shortfall was the reason for the evaluation at Boeing in January 1962. Can any reader confirm this?
